DATO’ DR. AHMAD NAWAB


Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Nawab hails from Penang is a well-known Malaysian composer in the country and still actively involved in his work until today. Throughout his career, he has produced more than 200 albums performed by popular and talented locals and foreign artists such as Hetty Koes Endang, Khatijah Ibrahim, Sudirman Hj. Arshad, Ramlah Ram, Broery Marantika dan others.
His popularity has proven of his quality work where he still manage to maintain and sustain his presence for more than thirty years in the music world in the midst of emergence of the many other young and versatile composers.
Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Nawab was also given the responsibility to compose the song entitled “Malaysia Truly Asia”, by Khatijah Ibrahim and had became the theme song to promote Malaysia internationally. Todate his great effort and contribution to the country musical arena, he was awarded a “Honarory Doctrate In Literature”, by University Putra Malaysia in the year 2000.

HANAFIE IMAM
Hanafie holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Composition and Arranging from Berklee Collage of Music, Boston, USA Master of Music in Music Education & Performance from University of Miami, Florida, USA and now is working his PhD at the University Malaya. Hanafie is currently a professor at the Human Ecology Faculty in UPM and was previously the Head of the Music Department at both UiTM Shah Alam and National Arts Academy, UiTM and The International Collage of Music. Hanafie has directed the Sheila On 7 Concert at the Shah Alam Stadium (2001), Hanafie and Picantes Jazz Concert at the Sunrise Jazz Festival Bukit Kiara (2001), and was the music director for the theatre Keris Sang Puteri which was staged in conjunction with the launching of Istana Budaya.

NARAWI HAJI RASHIDI
Narawi is Head of Department at the Heritage Recourse Centre in the Sarawak Cultural Village where he is responsible for the preservation of cultural activities as well as heading the research program on arts and culture, organizing events and cultural festival, conducting the music classes and dancing workshops. His work as a Technical Producer have led him to be involved in the productions Rainforest World Music Festival since 1998 until 2001, Sarawak Ethnic Festival (Gawai Tourism Night) since 1996 until 2002, Sarawak Cultural Troupe to Citrawarna 2002, Sarawak Cultural Troupe to LIMA Langkawi 1999, producer for Tuku’ Kame’ – Rhythm of Rainforest 1999 and Gadang 2001, Valiha – Sape (Madagascar & Sarawak Music) Rentak Serumpun (Traditional Dance Music). Narawi lead the Tuku’ Kame’ and participated at the MTV Band Alert 1999 where they walk away with Grand Prix Award & MTV Breakthrough Award. Narawai is also the Music Facilitator for the music and dance courses at the National Arts Academy for the Lecturers of Malaysian Teachers Collage. Among the local and international performances he has been involved include the Warana Festival Australia 1986, ASEAN Folklore Festival Thailand 1988, Victor Harbour Folklore Festival Australia 1998, Volvo World Music Festival KL 2001, NATAS Singapore 1998 – 2000, LIFA Langkawi 2002 and Japan Music Festival 2003.

SUHAIMI MOHD ZAIN (PAK NGAH)
Suhaimi Mohd Zain, or also known as Pak Ngah is a well-known composer of traditional music throughout Malaysia. Born in Kuala Lumpur in 1958, Pak Ngah has been involved in music since his early days at school. His talent in music was recognized and he was offered to be a full time musician at the Kompleks Budaya Negara (KBN) in 1977. Through KBN, he educated himself through music seminars and courses conducted both inside and outside of Malaysia until his decided to become independently involved in the music industry music with his own company. He started to composed songs for theatre ever since he was in KBN. Theatre productions which feature him as a music director include Malam Ini Penyu Menangis, Cindai, Tikar Mengkuang Seri Tegak Berlima, Rubiah and Muzikal Lantai T. Pinkie at Istana Budaya (2006).

ABDUL FATAH KARIM, AMN
Abdul Fatah Karim was a pioneering force in the development of Malaysia’s symphony orchestra curriculum. He was responsible for the formulation of Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports music programmed and played an active role as a violin tutor to the earliest participants of these government initiatives.

Born in Kota Bahru Kelantan, on 10 February 1935, Abdul Fatah began his music studies in the violin under the tutelage of the late Abdullah Bohari. Furthering his music education abroad to the Royal Academy of Music in London, Abdul Fatah continued to study violin, as well as harmony and music conducting from 1967 to 1973.

Upon his return to Malaysia, Abdul Fatah served as a music lecturer at the Sultan Idris Teachers Collage, Perak from 1973, and was then posted to Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports as a Director of Music in 1978.

While at the ministry, Abdul Fatah initiated numerous music projects, such as the National Music Camp, the ASEAN Youth Music Workshop, where he was appointed camp director and guest conductor at the inaugural workshop, and the World Youth Music Camp. Following a course on youth orchestras in the UK, Abdul Fatah set up the Orkestra Simfoni Muda in 1982 to nurture and groom the young music talents for the future Orkestra Simfoni Kebangsaan.

In recognition of his extensive contributions in the field of music, Abdul Fatah was awarded the Australian Cultural Award in 1977 and 1981, the ASEAN (Cultural Communication – literary Work) in 1990, and the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) by His Majesty The Yang Dipertuan Agong.
